Virginia Democrats Move to Weaken Crime Sentences

Liberty Check

Democrats in Virginia’s General Assembly have introduced proposals aimed at eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for violent crimes. This sweeping effort raises serious concerns about public safety and the erosion of justice for victims.

These legislative moves are happening as Democrats gain full control in Virginia, pushing new policies that benefit offenders over law-abiding citizens.

  • Delegate Rae Cousins has put forward a bill ending mandatory minimums for crimes including rape, manslaughter, assaulting police, child pornography offenses, and repeat violent felonies.
  • The bill would end the required five-year minimum for producing or distributing child pornography and the 25-year minimum for rape while allowing sentences to be served concurrently rather than consecutively.
  • For criminals using firearms in severe offenses, mandatory minimums would shrink to as little as one year, limiting consequences for some of the gravest violations.

If enacted, these changes would tie the hands of law enforcement and make it harder to hold violent offenders accountable, further threatened by efforts to end courtroom recording devices and lessen transparency.

Governor Abigail Spanberger could stop this legislation, but her alliance with radical policies leaves little hope for a veto.

Our freedoms depend on staying vigilant.
