The safety of our communities depends on the vigorous prosecution of those who violate the most fundamental right of all: the right to life. This admission of guilt finally brings some measure of accountability to a case that has haunted New York for decades.
Prosecutors detailed a gruesome pattern of strangulation and dismemberment, crimes that highlight the necessity of a strong criminal justice system. The suspect’s admission includes the deaths of Sandra Costilla, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, and five other innocent women.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families,” his ex-wife, Asa Ellerup, stated outside the courthouse.
“Their loss is immeasurable and the focus should be on them at this time and moment.”
Heuermann is expected to receive multiple consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole. Under the terms of the agreement, he must also cooperate with federal investigators on future inquiries.
Protecting the innocent from such depravity is the primary duty of the state. We must ensure that our laws prioritize the rights of victims and the safety of the public over the comfort of the accused.
Our freedoms depend on staying vigilant.
