In a surprising move that has left candy lovers baffled, the United Kingdom’s Food Standards Agency (FSA) has issued a warning against one of America’s beloved treats, Jolly Rancher candies, labeling them “unsafe to eat.” This advisory affects all varieties, including Jolly Rancher hard candies, Misfits, Fruity 2 in 1s, and Berry Gummies.

The FSA’s concern centers around the presence of Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH) and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH) in these candies. The agency claims these substances render the candies non-compliant with U.K. regulations and has advised British consumers to avoid purchasing or consuming them.

While the agency stops short of an outright ban, it has requested that local authorities take steps to remove these products from shelves, citing potential long-term health risks. However, they assure that there is no immediate danger if the candies have already been consumed.

For decades, Jolly Ranchers have been a staple in American candy culture, first hitting the U.S. market in 1949 and later being acquired by the Hershey Company in 1996. The candies are known for their iconic flavors like watermelon, cherry, and blue raspberry.

Todd Scott, a spokesperson for Hershey, reassures American consumers that the safety and quality of Jolly Rancher candies remain the company’s top priority. He emphasizes that while their products are safe for U.S. consumers, variations in international regulations can sometimes lead to discrepancies in compliance.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has highlighted the potential health risks of mineral oil hydrocarbons, noting that MOAH can be genotoxic carcinogens, and some MOSH may accumulate in the liver. However, the U.S. FDA regulates these substances and allows their use under specific conditions.

Hershey is actively working with the FSA to resolve these issues and hopes to see Jolly Ranchers back on U.K. shelves soon. In the meantime, American consumers can continue to enjoy these classic candies with confidence, knowing they meet U.S. safety standards.

    All candy is a delicacy and too much of a good thing is bad for you

    Mineral oil can block nutrients.

    The US allows a lot of harmful chemicals in food that other countries don’t allow. Candy is bad for you. Maybe OK for an occasional treat but if you eat a lot of it, it is bad for your health.
