A Florida father now faces serious charges after authorities say he used a barbaric method to discipline his teenage daughter — killing the family’s kittens in front of her.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office arrested David Charette Jr., 48, on charges of aggravated animal cruelty this week. Deputies responded to a home in Pine Manor following reports that a man was attempting to drown and strike a two-month-old kitten named Luna.

Bodycam video released by authorities shows the disturbing scene as deputies confronted Charette about his treatment of the animal. Witnesses told law enforcement that Charette allegedly abused and killed the family’s kittens in front of his daughter whenever she “acted up.”

In the footage, Charette defended his actions, claiming he was merely bathing the kitten.

“The cat is in perfectly healthy condition,” Charette told deputies. “I have to give the cat a bath because it soils itself in the cage.”

“It’s covered in crap and I have to give it a bath, and it cries, and she doesn’t like that,” he added.

Lee County Sheriff Carmine Marceno expressed outrage at the allegations, particularly the calculated cruelty directed at Charette’s daughter.

“A daughter says that when she acts up or when she’s in trouble, her father kills her kittens. This is sickening to me,” Marceno told CBS affiliate WINK.

The investigation revealed an even darker pattern of abuse. Authorities learned that Charette had allegedly killed two other kittens over the previous year using different methods of torture.

In June, investigators say Charette smothered a one-month-old kitten with a bleach-soaked rag. In a separate incident, he allegedly killed a three-month-old kitten with a blow-dryer.

Both kittens had been buried in the backyard, though investigators were only able to recover one during their search of the property.

Luna, the kitten at the center of the most recent allegations, was taken to a local animal hospital for treatment and is now recovering, according to the sheriff’s office.

The case highlights the intersection of animal cruelty and child abuse — a connection long recognized by law enforcement and child welfare experts. Studies have consistently shown that individuals who abuse animals often engage in other forms of violence, particularly against vulnerable family members.

Charette now faces aggravated animal cruelty charges as the investigation continues.
