The Justice Department’s inspector general has verified reports that FBI investigators asked witnesses whether an employee under scrutiny had voiced support for President Trump. The findings highlight concerning questioning practices focused on constitutionally protected beliefs during security clearance reviews.
According to acting Inspector General Don Berthiaume, a memorandum was sent to FBI leadership warning that vague and broad interview questions by the Security Division risked infringing on constitutional rights and were not always connected to actual security concerns.
