Funding Cut Puts Miami Minor Care Program in Jeopardy

Liberty Check

  • The Trump administration terminated an $11 million contract with Miami Catholic Charities for migrant minor care.
  • Officials cited a sharp drop in illegal border crossings as the reason for ending the funding.
  • Archbishop Thomas Wenski said the program’s work with vulnerable children has been unmatched.

The Trump administration has officially canceled an $11 million contract with the Archdiocese of Miami, citing the massive drop in unaccompanied minors crossing the border.

This decision shuts down a program that has operated for over six decades as the federal government consolidates unused facilities.

HHS Press Secretary Emily G. Hillard noted that the Office of Refugee Resettlement is closing sites because the administration has successfully prioritized stopping illegal entry and human trafficking.

White House officials argue that a secure border naturally leads to fewer crossings and necessitates a reduction in spending.

“Our track record in serving this vulnerable population is unmatched,” Archbishop Thomas Wenski stated in response to the cuts.

“Yet, the Archdiocese of Miami’s Catholic Charities’ services for unaccompanied minors has been stripped of funding and will be forced to shut down within three months.”

Archbishop Wenski warned that the loss of federal funding would cause services to dissolve before the end of the year.

He argued that it is baffling to dismantle a highly competent program despite the reduction in illegal migration numbers.

The White House has countered by stating that funding cuts were applied across 49 different charities to ensure common-sense border policies prevail.

This fiscal consolidation reflects a shift toward constitutional governance by ending perpetual reliance on federal grants when the underlying demand has vanished.

Americans deserve better.
