Liberty Check

  • Rex Heuermann pleaded guilty to seven murders and admitted to an eighth death after years of maintaining his innocence.
  • The plea deal includes a commitment for Heuermann to cooperate with the FBI regarding the decades-old crimes.
  • Investigators linked the suspect to the murders using DNA analysis from evidence retrieved in 2023.

Rex Heuermann admitted his guilt in court on Wednesday, confessing to the murders of eight women over nearly two decades.

The Long Island serial killer agreed to a plea deal that likely yields several life sentences without the possibility of parole.

The victims were identified as Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Lynn Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Valerie Mack, Jessica Taylor, Sandra Costilla, and Karen Vergata.

Law enforcement discovered their remains over a period starting in 2010.

Defense attorney Michael Brown suggested the confession provided a cathartic release for his client.

“He certainly wanted to save the families of the victims the ordeal of going to trial, coupled with saving his family from that,” Brown said.

The pursuit of justice in this case highlights the critical role of law enforcement in protecting the right to life and safety for all citizens.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for mid-June to finalize the consequences for these horrific crimes.

Americans deserve better.
