Mayor Cites Faith to Justify Sanctuary Policies

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani invoked his Islamic faith on Friday to promote sanctuary city policies while restricting federal immigration authorities. This comes despite Islam’s prohibition on non-Muslims entering its most sacred city.
- Mamdani signed an order barring ICE access to city property like schools and hospitals.
- He argued that Islam’s migration narrative justifies supporting migrants in New York.
- The mayor has openly opposed federal immigration enforcement and urged resistance to ICE agents.
During an interfaith event, Mamdani said,
“I consider my own faith, Islam, a religion built upon a narrative of migration. The story of the Hijrah reminds us of the prophet Muhammad, [who] was a stranger too, who fled Mecca and was welcomed in Medina … If faith offers us the moral compass to stand alongside the stranger, government can provide the resources. Let’s create a new expectation of City Hall where power is wielded to love, to embrace, and protect. We will stand with the stranger today.”
Mamdani pledged to block ICE from entering New York City without a judicial warrant, doubling down on his resistance to federal immigration control.
President Trump responded by cutting off federal funding to all sanctuary cities starting in February, aiming to combat policies that shield criminals from immigration enforcement.
