Schumer Attacks Voter ID Bill Despite Broad Support

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer promised fierce opposition to the SAVE America Act, which requires a photo ID and proof of citizenship to vote. He accused Republicans of targeting poor and minority voters, equating the bill to segregation-era tactics.

“What they are proposing in this so-called SAVE Act is like Jim Crow 2.0,” Schumer told CNN.

Polling from August 2025 shows 83% of Americans, including majorities across racial lines, favor voter ID at the polls. Even 71% of Democrats joined 95% of Republicans in supporting such requirements.

“About 83% of the American people, including a majority Democrats, support voter ID laws,” host Jake Tapper noted on CNN.

The House passed the bill with just one Democrat in support. The law’s intent is to secure elections and restore public faith in the democratic process.

Schumer also objected to federal agents enforcing voting laws at polling places, claiming it would intimidate voters and undermine democracy.

“They show no evidence of voter fraud… To have ICE agents… by the polling places, that just flies in the face of how democracy works,” he said.

Republican Rep. Jason Smith disagreed, stating, “Illegals aren’t supposed to vote in this America… Apparently Democrats don’t like the rule of law.”
