There might soon be a peculiar sight at Boston’s iconic Fenway Park: Red Sox fans with empty hands, as the ballpark’s concession workers are on the verge of a historic strike.
In a move that could disrupt the fan experience, attendees are being urged to grab their snacks and drinks before entering the gates. This comes as Aramark employees, backed by the UNITE HERE Local 26 union, threaten to walk off the job. The Red Sox, fresh off a road trip, are set to face the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, but the real showdown might be between the union and management.
For the first time in Fenway Park’s storied 113-year history, a labor strike looms large. Last month, Aramark workers at both Fenway Park and the MGM Music Hall voted to authorize this unprecedented action. These employees, who include cooks, barbacks, souvenir vendors, and cashiers, are demanding better wages and working conditions.
Despite recent negotiations, the union claims there has been little progress. They argue that their demands are not just about pay increases but also about protecting jobs from automation and ensuring fair scheduling practices that honor seniority.
Currently, cashiers at Fenway earn $18.52 an hour, a figure that pales in comparison to their counterparts at Miami’s LoanDepot Park, who make $21.25 per hour. The workers’ contract expired nearly seven months ago, and without a new agreement, the strike could become a reality.
As fans prepare for the upcoming games, they might also witness a critical moment in labor history at one of America’s most beloved ballparks.

For the most part these are seasonal employees. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has automated the checkout process. The cooks, bar backs etc will always have work. I’m more concerned about the people that sling beverages coming out into the stands

People’s pay, for the same type of jobs, all across the nation, ARE NOT going to be the same. Thats life!
If there hasn’t been a raise for some time then maybe a raise. That doesn’t mean equal to another place.

The Aramark-prepared food at NRG Stadium in Houston used to be horrible. Fixed by drafting local restaurants to provide their more recognizable food. The order-taker-cashiers were volunteers from local high schools and charities who knew nothing about serving the public. They were lucky to have the pay that they had.
