Ancient Bones Turn British Home Renovation Into Overnight Police Stakeout

  • British police treated an ancient discovery like a modern crime scene, wasting taxpayer resources and disrupting a homeowner’s life.
  • The episode highlights how government bureaucracy and overreach can turn even a historical find into a regulatory nightmare.
  • Traditional Christian burial rites ultimately prevailed, underscoring the enduring role of faith and community in honoring the dead.

Ross Sledger expected a simple kitchen addition at his home in Wye, Kent. Instead, a builder’s discovery of old bones turned the property into what authorities initially treated as a crime scene.

Officers descended on the backyard, sifting through soil and stationing an overnight guard whose movements repeatedly triggered floodlights and barking dogs.

“They thought it was a crime scene,” Sledger said. “They had to have an officer overnight, and every half hour he had to get out of his car.”

“That set off the neighbor’s floodlights, which set off my dog barking. So as you can imagine, I didn’t get much sleep that night,” he added.

Within days specialists confirmed the bones were roughly one thousand years old and of Anglo-Saxon origin. The remains were transferred to historical authorities and eventually placed under the care of a local vicar.

After months of paperwork, the bones received a proper Christian burial at a nearby church in August, accompanied by the hymn “Jerusalem.”

“I think it was a question of getting permission and whether they would be allowed to be there,” Sledger said. “I think it was a bit more red tape than anything else.”

Sledger later found additional fragments while laying artificial grass, briefly fearing another delay. Officials quickly cleared the new pieces, and the project moved forward.

The Constitution must be defended.
