California Bill Sparks Fear of Targeting Journalists Exposing Fraud

California Democrats are pushing legislation that would shield immigration service providers from public scrutiny, potentially leading to criminal charges for independent journalists.

Assembly Bill 2624, dubbed the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ by critics, aims to protect far-left organizations from being exposed by citizen watchdogs.

Republican Assemblyman Carl DeMaio warns that the bill allows taxpayer-funded activists to demand the removal of video evidence capturing misconduct.

This move follows viral investigations into multimillion-dollar welfare and hospice fraud schemes that have plagued the state.

  • AB 2624 threatens the First Amendment by prioritizing the privacy of NGOs over government transparency.
  • The legislation lacks exemptions for undercover journalists, leaving them vulnerable to massive financial penalties.
  • State officials appear more focused on silencing whistleblowers than addressing billions in suspected Medicaid fraud.

“California Democrats are trying to intimidate citizen watchdog journalists and protect waste and fraud happening in far-Left-wing NGOs,” DeMaio said in a statement.

“AB 2624 can only be described as the ‘Stop Nick Shirley Act’ — a bill designed to silence citizen journalists exposing fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars.”

The bill mimics previous attempts to suppress transparency, such as the decade-long legal battle against undercover journalists who exposed Planned Parenthood.

Protecting powerful interests at the expense of the truth is a direct assault on the constitutional rights of every Californian.

The Constitution must be defended.
