American parents are facing sticker shock as expensive Fear of God Essentials hoodies become the latest must-have status symbols for tweens and teens, with some items costing up to $200 for a single piece of children’s clothing.

“It felt a little bit expensive for, at the time, 11- and 12-year-olds,” Kinna Thomas, a mother of two, told Business Insider about the clothing line that has taken middle schools by storm.

The Fear of God brand, created by Jerry Lorenzo and launched in 2011, features an Essentials line with T-shirts starting around $33 but hoodies ranging from approximately $130 to $200. The prices have left many parents questioning whether they should give in to the social pressure their children face.

In an interview with luxury fashion site Ssense, Lorenzo addressed the brand’s name and religious undertones.

“If someone asks me how Christianity fits into it, it just fits because it’s a part of who I am. But this is not a Christian clothing brand. It’s not, ‘Hey, this is about Jesus!’ Although as my brand has grown beyond my expectation, I naturally only want to give glory to him for my success.”

Thomas recalled the moment in 2022 when her boys first asked for Fear of God Essentials items for Christmas. “I was just like, ‘Wow, what are we doing,'” she said, expressing the shock many parents feel when confronted with such requests.

Despite her reservations, Thomas purchased the expensive clothing for her sons, 15-year-old Timmy and 16-year-old Julian. The items have since become wardrobe staples for the teenagers.

“I think people like it because it looks clean without doing too much,” Julian said of the Essentials hoodies, adding that they’re “really popular” at his school.

“I also like that Essentials doesn’t try too hard. It’s simple, comfortable, and still looks good, which is probably why so many teenagers wear it all the time,” Timmy added.

Some parents justify the expense by noting the brand’s acceptance at their children’s schools. “My children have a private education at a Christian school, and they’re allowed to wear Fear of God Essentials,” Thomas said. “They’re not necessarily allowed to wear some of the other brands.”

Another mother, Amy Nachon, said she supports her son’s clothing choices despite the cost because it gives him confidence during difficult middle school years.

“If my son knows what he wants to wear and has an idea of his style and his look, I’ll support him in that,” Nachon said. “Seventh grade is hard enough.”

The trend raises questions about consumerism among American youth and the financial pressure placed on families already struggling with inflation and rising costs under the current administration. When children as young as 11 demand $200 hoodies as social necessities, it reflects broader cultural issues about materialism and peer pressure in modern America.

Americans deserve better.
