Do You Think the “No-Shampoo” Trend is Sanitary?

Do You Think the “No-Shampoo” Trend is Sanitary?

Here’s The Scoop

The #nopoo and #noshampoo movement, gaining steam among teen boys and young men, is a dangerous trend that experts warn could cause dandruff, irritate the scalp, stunt hair growth, and worsen scalp problems.

Dr. Anastasia Therianou, a dermatologist and scalp specialist, says that forgoing shampoo can lead to inflammation, flakiness, and an unbalanced scalp microbiome, allowing the yeast malassezia to proliferate and cause dandruff.

A 2021 study published in the Skin Appendage Disorders journal found that people who wash their hair less face an increased risk of hair loss. Despite this, several TikTokers claim that not using shampoo has improved their hair. However, some TikTok commenters have shared their negative experiences, including hair loss and dandruff, after trying the no-shampoo method.

Humza Islam, a TikToker promoting the “no shampoo” trend, clarifies that it doesn’t mean not washing your hair at all, but rather using alternative methods like water, apple cider vinegar, or baking soda. The method he touts is called “hair training,” which aims to train the hair and scalp to only need washing occasionally.

However, dermatologists advise against ditching shampoo from your routine. Dr. Angela Tewari, a London-based dermatologist specializing in hair, says that water alone won’t remove dirt and oil from the scalp and hair. She adds that shampoos are less harsh on hair than ever, and if you’re reacting negatively to shampoo, you’re using the wrong one.
