Amid Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, some U.S. lawmakers, world leaders, and experts are questioning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s mental state.
Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Putin’s recent behavior is “erratic.”
“I met with him many times, and this is a different Putin,” Rice said. “He was always calculating and cold, but this is different. He seems erratic. There is an ever deepening, delusional rendering of history.”
Former Director of National Intelligence Jim Clapper also thinks Putin has changed.
“I personally think he is unhinged,” Clapper said. “I worry about his acuity and balance.”
Clapper said that questions about Putin’s mental stability are especially relevant since he has his finger on the nuclear trigger.
An unnamed senior national security official said Putin seemed “paranoid” and “unwilling to listen to reason.”
