Should Tom Homan Arrest Gavin Newsom for Defying Federal Law?
Here’s The Scoop
Governor Gavin Newsom of California seems more interested in scoring points on social media than addressing the real issues plaguing his state. On Monday, President Trump was asked about comments made by Tom Homan, the White House Executive Associate Director of Enforcement and Removal Operations, often referred to as the “border czar.” Homan had stated that if officials like Newsom cross a legal line, they are not above the law. Despite the media’s twisted portrayal, Homan never specifically threatened to arrest Newsom or Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass.
Homan’s actual words were clear: “You cross that line, it’s a felony to knowingly harbor and conceal an illegal alien. It’s a felony to impede law enforcement from doing their job.” Yet, Newsom took these comments out of context to play the role of the defiant hero. As Los Angeles was engulfed in chaos, with rioters waving the Mexican flag, Newsom challenged Homan, saying, “Come after me, arrest me. Let’s just get it over with, tough guy.”
When President Trump was asked if Homan should take Newsom up on his challenge, he humorously suggested, “I would do it if I was Tom. I think it’s great. Gavin will like the publicity, but I think it would be very good.” Trump then got serious, critiquing Newsom’s performance as governor: “He’s done a terrible job. Look, I like Gavin Newsom, he’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent; everybody knows.” He pointed to California’s disastrous high-speed rail project as evidence, contrasting it with his own record of completing projects under budget.
Predictably, Newsom reacted with outrage, claiming, “The President of the United States just called for the arrest of a sitting Governor.” He described this as a step toward authoritarianism, even as Los Angeles burned. Newsom’s focus on theatrics over governance is evident, as he continues to prioritize his image over the safety and well-being of Californians.
California chose Newsom, and now they’re facing the consequences of that decision. It’s time for leaders who prioritize the needs of their citizens over personal grandstanding.
