Texas A&M Panel Finds Firing Violated Rights

Liberty Check

  • A student captured video of English lecturer Melissa McCoul being challenged over whether teaching gender ideology was legal, referencing President Trump’s executive orders restricting such education in colleges.
  • The internal review concluded the university lacked sufficient grounds for firing and failed to follow due process, with the summary dismissal found to be unjustified.
  • Political leaders, including Governor Abbott and State Rep. Brian Harrison, condemned both the professor and university leadership, urging removal and an end to lessons on gender ideology. The dispute has sparked calls for audits of all courses and stricter university policies.

A Texas A&M committee determined the university unjustly fired a professor after a student was ejected for questioning a lesson on gender identity.

The committee found procedures were not properly followed and no valid cause for dismissal was provided.

Interim President Tommy Williams will decide next steps, following the committee’s unanimous, nonbinding recommendation.

Liberty Surveys will continue to expose any overreach in higher education.

We will demand accountability for attacks on academic freedom rooted in political motives.

Our freedoms depend on staying vigilant.
