Should Married Couples Sleep in Separate Bedrooms?
Should Married Couples Sleep in Separate Bedrooms?
Here’s The Scoop
In the face of conventional norms, Shark Tank’s Barbara Corcoran has shared her rather unconventional secret to maintaining a vibrant 35-year marriage with husband Bill Higgins. The couple’s secret? Sleeping in separate bedrooms.
The 75-year-old real estate tycoon opened up on a recent episode of Today, revealing that the couple has maintained separate bedrooms for approximately four decades. This separation, however, is not born out of discord but, rather, it’s a conscious choice that adds an element of intrigue and “sexiness” to their relationship.
Their unique nighttime routine caters to their different sleeping habits and tidiness levels. Corcoran, a self-proclaimed neat-freak, relishes the peace that comes from not having to deal with her husband’s clutter. “Now I sleep like a baby,” she quipped.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Corcoran has given fans a glimpse into her bedroom affairs. Last September, she humorously revealed she was adding a CPAP machine mask to her bedtime routine. CPAP devices, which aid in treating sleep apnea and other breathing issues, are often associated with obesity, but Corcoran’s post emphasized that even “normal, healthy” people can suffer from sleep apnea.
In these instances, it appears that Corcoran is not only pushing the boundaries of traditional marital norms but also challenging the stigmas associated with medical equipment usage. It’s a refreshing perspective, and perhaps one that more couples should consider.

My wife, whom I love dearly, and I have slept in seperate bedrooms for the last 25 years of our 48 year marriage. My wife requires cool, silent, dark sleeping while I need warm, TV on, low volumn noise. We visit each other for romance, usually in the mornings and usually in my room because I don’t mind a little mess where as my wife is a neat nick. It has worked out very well. It’s almost like having a mistress.

I agree 100% & there’s nothing wrong w/ what you & your wife are doing. Don’t listen to the negative BS.

My wife and I did this for maybe a decade, and it worked out really well. We had to eventually switch to a single bedroom due to our needing more space to store things.

My wife and I slept in seperate bedrooms for a few months due to her desire to do so, and it worked out pretty well for a few different reasons

I would rather sleep together and be apart the other 18 hours. 52 years and never a night apart that was not work-related.

This would be a deal breaker for me. I ended that trajectory with someone when they thought it was perfectly fine for this and subsequently the entire relationship. One of the anchors of marriage is sharing a bed and if one or the other parties won’t do that you don’t have a marriage. It raised flags that all came out later. Regretably it’s usually the female half that initiates this. Exceptions for illness obviously but it should be temporary. When my dad was dying in the hospital his wife would not leave his bedside even to go eat. Call me old fashioned but if this is going on in your marriage you’re only roommates.

Does she snore? Has she gained a lot of weight? Is she a Leftist loon who doesn’t wanna sleep in a room with a loaded handgun in the nightstand?
(The first two are jokes.)

Married for 51 years and sleeping in a different room has lost its middle of the night sex.I am a tosser and turner all night long and sometimes getting up in the middle of the night to remaking the bed.Sleep problems with a Cpap that make farting sounds is not good for your partner.Best sleep alone and make a appointment for sex.Looking at our life together and realizing most do not stay together very long.
