China’s strategic expansion in the Bahamas is raising alarms about potential threats to U.S. national security, as the communist nation invests heavily in projects that may serve dual purposes. Retired Rear Adm. Peter Brown, who served as Homeland Security advisor under President Donald Trump, has sounded the alarm on China’s growing influence just 50 miles from Florida’s coast.

For years, China has been making significant inroads into the Caribbean and Latin America, and their latest ventures in the Bahamas are no exception. The Chinese-controlled British Colonial Hotel in Nassau, located directly across from the U.S. Embassy, is a prime example. Brown suggests that the hotel could be used for intelligence gathering on U.S. personnel, raising serious concerns about espionage activities.

China’s investments in the Bahamas are vast and varied, including a $40 million grant for a national stadium, a $3 billion mega-port in Freeport, and $40 million for infrastructure projects like the North Abaco Port and Little Abaco Bridge. The China EXIM Bank has also provided substantial loans for major developments, such as a four-lane highway and the Baha Mar Resort.

These investments have come in the wake of Hurricane Dorian’s devastation in 2019, a period when now-Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned that China might exploit the crisis to gain a strategic foothold near American shores. Rubio’s prescient warning highlighted the potential national security threat posed by China’s proximity to Florida.

The Bahamas is not just a vacation hotspot; it plays a crucial role in U.S. military operations. The U.S. Navy operates an underwater testing facility there, and the islands are situated under key space launch paths. Maintaining a strong relationship with the Bahamas is essential for U.S. security, as it allows for early detection and management of potential threats.

As China continues to expand its influence in the region, the U.S. must remain vigilant and proactive in maintaining its role as the Bahamas’ primary ally. Failing to do so could result in China becoming the dominant power in our backyard—a scenario that poses significant risks to American interests.
