Yotzeli Peña, a 23-year-old Venezuelan, expressed her concerns: “It is going to be more difficult, that’s why we are going in hopes of getting an appointment quicker so we are able to cross before [Trump] takes office.”

This sentiment is not isolated. In the days leading up to the November 5 presidential election, migrants in Tapachula voiced their support for Vice President Kamala Harris and their opposition to Trump. One Venezuelan man, surrounded by hundreds of other migrants, declared his admiration for Harris while dismissing Trump with a symbolic gesture.

The anticipation of a Trump presidency has prompted discussions at the highest levels of the Department of Homeland Security. Officials have been preparing for a potential surge at the border, emphasizing the need for Border Patrol and immigration enforcement to be ready.

Smugglers have seized on the uncertainty, urging migrants to make their move before Trump assumes office. According to a Mexican migrant advocate, coordination for the caravan’s departure began on U.S. election day, with fear-driven messages circulating as Trump’s victory became apparent.

Trump’s stance on immigration is well-known. He has promised to continue building the border wall, reinstate the Remain in Mexico program, expand Border Patrol forces, and launch an unprecedented deportation initiative. Additionally, he aims to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to illegal migrant parents.
