What seemed like a dangerous late-night break-in in Alexandria, Virginia, turned out to be a misguided family prank, authorities revealed. The police devoted over 100 hours investigating the October 14 incident after security cameras showed masked individuals threatening homeowners and damaging property.

Detectives ultimately found the so-called intruders were the residents’ cousins, with an adult woman, her sons, and a nephew staging the event while two others filmed.

Police Chief Tarrick McGuire denounced the prank.

“A moral failure where consequences could result in deadly consequences.”

“Adults should be accountable for their children and not exercise this type of behavior. Hopefully, this will be a learning experience for their family.”

Chief McGuire added.
