A routine spearfishing trip off Florida’s coast took a drastic turn when 28-year-old Chance Armand was bitten by a bull shark, moments after assuring his visiting family there was nothing to fear.

Armand, a Milton native and experienced free diver, said sharks are common but rarely pose a threat to those cautious in the ocean.

“As soon as he bit my leg and realized it wasn’t the fish, he let go and didn’t chew on me or anything, thankfully.”

“It could have been way worse if he decided to gnaw on me for a little bit.”

With help from his group, Armand applied a makeshift tourniquet, preventing further harm before returning to shore and receiving swift medical attention.

He highlighted that no bones, arteries, or ligaments were damaged and considers himself fortunate to walk away with only stitches and gratitude.

Armand is committed to promoting the responsible management of Florida’s shark populations, stating

“They’re a dime a dozen out there, we see them every single time we go out.”

Despite the incident, he looks forward to returning to the ocean, advocating for common-sense conservation and vigilance.

Only by staying vigilant and respecting nature can we safeguard both lives and rights off our coasts.

Our freedoms depend on staying vigilant.
