Mayor Katrina Thompson of Broadview, Illinois issued a civil emergency order in response to credible bomb and death threats against village officials after protests related to federal immigration enforcement. The Board of Trustees meeting shifted online following law enforcement warnings of attempts to disrupt village government by out-of-town agitators.
Authorities notified the FBI, which is now investigating the escalating threats, some of which specifically targeted Mayor Thompson.
“I will not allow threats of violence or intimidation to disrupt the essential functions of our government,” Thompson stated.
Upholding local government functions requires prioritizing safety, yet it remains essential to respect constitutional rights. As tensions rise between public order and free speech, robust oversight is needed to ensure government authority does not override foundational liberties.
