Republican Iowa gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn isn’t pulling punches when it comes to his Democrat opponent Rob Sand. In an exclusive interview on the Ruthless Podcast released Friday, Lahn exposed what he sees as a blatant attempt by Democrats to conceal their unpopular progressive agenda.

“[The Democrats] are realizing that their ideas don’t sell,” Lahn said. “So what do they have to do? They have to pretend to be somebody they’re not.”

Lahn pointed to Sand’s cozy relationships with some of the most radical voices in the Democratic Party — Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. These aren’t exactly the endorsements of a moderate.

A farmer and businessman who understands the concerns of everyday Iowans, Lahn has built his campaign around agricultural issues and healthcare policy that actually resonates with working families. His approach is refreshingly direct and grounded in reality.

“A lot of our campaign, even in the primary, people said, ‘you can’t run a Republican primary running on the issues you’re running on,'” said Lahn, who received the first endorsement from Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) PAC. “And I said, ‘We can because this is what the people actually care about.’ I know because I’m with them. I’m one of them.”

Lahn shocked the political establishment when he won a crowded primary in early June, defeating favorite Rep. Randy Feenstra, who had President Donald Trump’s endorsement at the time. Trump has since thrown his support behind Lahn — a testament to the campaign’s authenticity and grassroots appeal.

The Sand campaign’s response was predictable — all attack, no substance.

“Zach Lahn is a career political operative who can’t answer basic questions about where he lives,” Sand deputy campaign manager Emma O’Brien claimed. “Meanwhile, Rob Sand has support from across the state and across the aisle, including from over 2,400 registered Republicans and over 6,000 no-party voters, because Iowans trust him from his work as State Auditor and know him from his regular visits to their communities.”

Ruthless Podcast co-host Josh Holmes praised Lahn for his willingness to tackle complex issues head-on, particularly healthcare.

“You don’t get a lot of Republicans nationwide that want to weigh deeply into it,” Holmes said.

The race dynamics are fascinating. Earlier this week, Fox News released projections showing Democrats as favorites to win in Iowa — a puzzling assessment given that no Democrat has won the governor’s race since 2006, and Iowa has backed Trump decisively in three consecutive presidential elections.

Holmes offered a more realistic assessment of the political landscape.

“What has happened to the Democratic Party over the last 20 years, in particular in states like yours, is that they just no longer resonate,” Holmes observed. “They’re culturally divorced from what it is that families are dealing with on a day-to-day basis.”

That cultural disconnect is exactly what Lahn is banking on. While Sand collects endorsements from coastal elites and far-left firebrands, Lahn is talking to farmers, small business owners, and families about the issues that actually affect their lives.

The interview was part of the Ruthless Midterm Interview Series, an ongoing initiative covering major candidates across the country. The hosts have already interviewed candidates in 18 states ahead of the November midterms.

Lahn made clear where his priorities lie, contrasting his commitment to Iowa with Sand’s apparent national ambitions.

“I don’t want to go anywhere else but this seat to be the governor,” Lahn said. “I want to help make Iowa the best place to raise a family, start businesses, all of these things. And I think we’ve got a good foundation right now. But, you know, this is what I want to do. The New York Times has my opponent, I think, two days ago, as a very likely person to jump right into a presidential campaign.”

There it is — Sand isn’t running to serve Iowa. He’s using the governorship as a launching pad for higher office, collecting endorsements from the progressive wing of the party while pretending to be a moderate for Iowa voters.

Iowans deserve a governor who’s committed to their state, not a career politician eyeing the next rung on the ladder.
