Early Monday morning in Maryland, a reminder of government priorities versus citizen safety came crashing—literally—across Interstate 70. One of those massive wind turbine blades broke loose from a truck and slammed into highway traffic, injuring an innocent motorist and closing down crucial travel lanes during the busy rush to work.
Authorities from the Maryland State Highway Administration confirmed that at approximately 5:30 a.m., a tractor trailer was hauling a wind turbine blade westbound. It struck the guardrail and swept into eastbound lanes. The blade was then clipped by a second tractor trailer heading east. “At approximately 5:30 a.m., a tractor trailer traveling westbound on I-70 was pulling a wind turbine blade that struck the guardrail causing the blade to go partially into the eastbound lanes. The blade was then clipped by a tractor trailer traveling eastbound,” the SHA stated.
Think about it—one blade from a so-called clean energy project shut down an entire interstate in both directions. All westbound lanes and two eastbound lanes were closed off while authorities scrambled to clear the wreckage.
A single person was sent to the hospital. Reports indicate injuries were not life-threatening, but that’s cold comfort when bureaucratic green dreams are literally falling into traffic. Why can’t taxpayer-funded shipping be held to a higher standard?
DOT cameras caught the chaos, showing the blade sprawled across multiple lanes as drivers were left stuck and frustrated. After several hours of traffic misery, all lanes reopened by 8:28 a.m., but not before thousands were reminded of the risks we bear when transportation safety competes with windmill priorities.
It’s no secret that the Roth Rock wind farm, with its 20 massive turbines built beside coal plants in western Maryland, was held up as a politically correct victory back in 2011. Now, townspeople have to ask: are these expensive projects putting our freedom of movement on the back burner? Heavy-duty tow crews worked overtime, and the trucking unit was finally moved, but the lesson remains.
Bureaucrats chase climate points while ignoring the safety concerns felt by every American stuck behind a windmill blade on I-70. When will they acknowledge that real people’s lives and property come before political slogans? How many more so-called green mishaps will it take?
Our highways should serve everyday Americans, not be blocked by taxpayer-funded projects gone wrong. Accidents like these prove that when government planners skip the details, we all pay the price—sometimes with our freedom, sometimes with our safety.
