Democratic U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed appeared on CNN’s “The Source” Wednesday night, where he sidestepped direct questions about his association with controversial leftist media figure Hasan Piker. When pressed on whether he would renounce Piker’s support, El-Sayed instead pivoted to discussing other potential campaign allies.
The Michigan Democrat indicated his desire to have Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) join him on the campaign trail. But when directly asked about distancing himself from Piker, El-Sayed avoided giving a clear answer, suggesting he’s “not that focused” on who campaigns alongside him.
The response raises questions about El-Sayed’s willingness to draw clear lines between mainstream Democratic politics and the increasingly radical voices that have gained prominence in progressive circles. Piker, known for controversial commentary on his online platforms, has become a divisive figure even within liberal media spaces.
