Liberty Check
- Department of Education identified the university’s violation of Title IX and demanded biology-based definitions for “male” and “female” in school policy.
- Female volleyball athletes were made to share locker rooms and rooms with a male, sparking privacy and safety fears.
- Disturbed teammates and other teams forfeited matches, while officials and students faced retaliation after speaking out.
The Department of Education found San Jose State University violated Title IX by allowing a male to compete in women’s volleyball. The school now faces federal enforcement action if it fails to comply with corrective measures within 10 days.
San Jose State is reviewing the federal findings after an investigation exposed violations related to women’s sports and privacy standards. The Office for Civil Rights revealed that female athletes were forced to share spaces and compete with a male player, raising serious concerns about fairness and safety.
San Jose State must now issue a public statement correcting its policies and apologize to affected players, affirming that sex is immutable in accordance with Title IX.
