Royal Caribbean Cruises has made a prudent decision to halt its scheduled visits to a private port in Haiti until next spring, reflecting a commitment to passenger safety amid growing concerns. The cruise line’s stop in Labadee, located on Haiti’s northern coast, will be paused “out of an abundance of caution” through April 2026, according to a Royal Caribbean Group spokesperson.

This move comes as the U.S. Department of State has elevated Haiti’s travel advisory to a “Do Not Travel” status as of July 15. The advisory cites significant threats such as kidnapping, crime, terrorist activity, civil unrest, and limited health care. Alarmingly, American citizens have been targeted, with kidnappers demanding hefty ransoms that have forced victims’ families to pay tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Despite these challenges, Royal Caribbean’s website highlights the allure of Labadee, describing it as a paradise with pristine sands, coral reefs, and jungle-covered hilltops. The site invites travelers to discover Haiti’s fascinating culture, history, and natural beauty, suggesting a wilder way to experience the Western Caribbean.

With 19 million Americans projected to take cruises this year, the demand for such vacations is undeniable. Stewart Chiron, a Miami-based cruise industry expert known as “The Cruise Guy,” notes that 2025 is shaping up to be another record year, with surging interest in Caribbean, Alaskan, and European destinations. A cruise forecast report indicates that 72% of passengers are seeking sunny getaways in the Caribbean, underscoring the region’s enduring appeal.
