Al Jazeera Accused: Silencing Voices, Targeting Press

Liberty Check

  • Al Jazeera staff in Gaza alleged to operate under Hamas influence.
  • Investigation finds reporters participate in silencing and harming critics.
  • Several journalists linked to militant groups by Israeli officials.

An investigation by The Free Press and the Center for Peace Communications exposes ties between Al Jazeera and Hamas in Gaza. Journalists revealed that entry into Al Jazeera’s ranks often requires Hamas affiliation, especially within the confines of Gaza.

“You have to be affiliated with Hamas to work at Al-Jazeera. Especially in Gaza, because most jobs go through Hamas. Hamas is the primary authority deciding who gets hired and who doesn’t. So, the majority of Al-Jazeera staff are an inseparable part of Hamas,” one independent reporter said in an interview.

Testimony describes Al Jazeera personnel helping Hamas monitor and punish those critical of the terror group, using their mobility to inform on independent journalists. Evidence suggests several Al Jazeera journalists actively support or participate in Hamas operations while presenting themselves as impartial media figures.

“Mohamed Washah is a journalist with Al-Jazeera and the head of Al Jazeera’s operations in the Gaza Strip. … If you look at his Instagram account, you’d see photos with all the Hamas leaders, just like Anas Al-Sharif,” a Gazan journalist disclosed.

Israeli Defense Forces identified multiple Al Jazeera journalists with ties to Hamas based on documents recovered during recent conflict. IDF intelligence accuses six Al Jazeera reporters of active collaboration with Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations.

“The IDF has disclosed intelligence information and numerous documents found in Gaza confirming the military affiliation of six Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad terrorist organizations. They are: Anas Jamal Mahmoud Al-Sharif, Alaa Abdul Aziz Muhammad Salama, Hossam Basel Abdul Karim Shabat, Ashraf Sami Ashour Saraj, Ismail Farid Muhammad Abu Omar, and Talal Mahmoud Abdul Rahman Aruki,” according to the release.

Evidence also details harrowing abuses, including reports of reporters lured into Hamas-controlled areas to be beaten or tortured for criticizing the group. In at least one instance, an Al Jazeera writer allegedly held hostages in his home.

Biased reporting and intimidation threaten free press and democracy in the region. Americans must insist on truth, transparency, and constitutional freedoms from all media outlets.

It’s time to push back.
