Democratic lawmakers are advancing the so-called “Dignity for Detained Immigrants Act,” seeking to limit Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s detention authority.

The legislation, introduced by Rep. Pramila Jayapal, would block ICE from holding many categories of illegal immigrants, including anyone claiming LGBTQ status, those over 60, or individuals with health issues.

This drastic measure phases out private detention, eliminates family detention, and opens broad exceptions that threaten border security.
