Kentucky bounced back in dramatic fashion after last week’s setback against Alabama.

The Wildcats traveled to College Station and left with a convincing 31-21 victory over the ninth-ranked Aggies. First-year head coach Will Stein earned his first road win in conference play as Kentucky snapped a nearly two-year drought against ranked opponents.

“This is what I expect us to do,” Stein said. “That’s how I expect us to play. That is the physicality, that’s the toughness, that’s the competitiveness, that’s the grit that I expect us to play with every single Saturday.”

Quarterback Kenny Minchey, a transfer from Notre Dame, delivered two touchdown passes including a 42-yard strike that gave Kentucky the lead for good. Running back CJ Baxter added two rushing scores as the Wildcats pulled away in the second half.

Kentucky’s defensive coordinator Jay Bateman, who spent the previous two seasons on Texas A&M’s staff, knew exactly how to disrupt the Aggies’ offense. Marcel Reed was held to 236 passing yards and threw two interceptions under constant pressure.

“I did not do a good enough job of coaching this team and preparing this team,” Elko said. “I don’t take any positives from this game. I don’t want to take away anything from Kentucky. … Kentucky came in here and whopped us.”

The Wildcats outgained Texas A&M 196-20 in the decisive third quarter, showcasing the kind of dominance that once defined Southeastern Conference football. Texas A&M now faces a tough road test at LSU next week while Kentucky returns home to host South Alabama.
