Legendary Rocker Undergoes Emergency Surgery After Devastating Injury

Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Jett is stepping away from the stage after suffering a serious injury that required immediate surgical intervention. The 67-year-old icon’s team announced Tuesday that Joan Jett & the Blackhearts had canceled their two remaining scheduled 2026 concerts in September.

“Following a recent injury, Joan Jett has undergone orthopedic surgery on a fractured vertebrae and will begin the necessary healing process,” the statement read.

“In close consultation with her doctors, Joan will not be able to perform at her forthcoming September scheduled shows in Costa Mesa, California, on Sept. 5 and Louisville, Kentucky, on Sept. 24.”

“While Joan hates to disappoint fans, she will be taking this time to focus on physical therapy and healing. She’s looking forward to delivering tremendous concerts for many years to come.”

The Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa confirmed the cancellation and announced that Cheap Trick would perform in Jett’s place, with X opening the show. Ticket holders can either attend the replacement concert or request refunds through their point of purchase.

Jett’s Louisville concert was scheduled for the opening day of the four-day Bourbon & Beyond festival at the Highland Festival Grounds. The festival lineup includes major acts such as Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Mumford & Sons, and Chris Stapleton.

Jett first rose to prominence in the 1970s as a founding member of the all-female rock band The Runaways. She later achieved international success after founding Joan Jett & the Blackhearts in 1979.

The band released 10 albums between 1981 and 2013, scoring major hits including “I Love Rock ‘n Roll,” “Bad Reputation,” and “I Hate Myself for Loving You.” Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2015.

Joan Jett & the Blackhearts have maintained an active touring schedule since their formation. In recent years, they’ve performed alongside legendary acts including Def Leppard, Mötley Crüe, Bryan Adams, Alanis Morissette, and Billy Idol. The band completed their first U.K. headline tour in 16 years this past July.

Last Monday, Jett shared a compilation of clips from their U.K. tour on Instagram, writing, “Thanks for the summer love Europe, can’t wait to come back.”

Jett has previously acknowledged that decades on the road have taken a physical toll and explained how she has adapted her fitness routine as she has aged.

“I never had to work out my whole life. I was just lucky I had an athletic body. But now it’s a different story. I see an arm and am like, ‘Whose arm is this with the crepe-y skin?'”

“But I try to walk every day and I do some weights. I had a shoulder operation so it’s important to keep my muscle strength up and I do a lot of core work. And you know, traveling, walking through airports and venues, that’s my exercise. But the traveling, that’s the one part of my job that I don’t love. It’s all wear and tear on your body.”

The band currently has no scheduled upcoming shows as Jett focuses on recovery and physical therapy. No additional details about the circumstances of the injury have been provided.
