Hollywood Legend Admits He ‘F—ed Up’ His Life So Badly He Didn’t Even Notice His Show Ended

Ted Danson is pulling back the curtain on one of the darkest chapters of his life — and it happened right as he was starring in one of America’s most beloved sitcoms. The 78-year-old actor revealed on his podcast “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” that his personal life was in such shambles during the final season of “Cheers” that he didn’t even realize the iconic show had ended.

“People say, ‘What was it like? What did you do when she was over?’ I said, ‘I had f—ed up my life so much that I didn’t even realize ‘Cheers’ was over,'” Danson confessed.

The admission sheds light on what was happening behind the scenes of one of television’s most successful runs. Danson starred as Sam Malone from 1982 to 1993, appearing in all 273 episodes — but the final year brought him face-to-face with his own demons.

“I barely knew myself,” he admitted, saying he had to take “a postgrad grow-up class fast” during that tumultuous time.

Seeking help, Danson drove regularly to Long Beach to meet with a mentor he described as “amazing,” someone who provided “a whole different kind of therapy spirituality kind of thing.”

“I wanted to stop being a liar,” Danson said. “I wanted to be emotionally mature. I wanted to change.”

The television star had previously touched on this period in an August 2025 podcast episode, telling guest Charlie Day that when people asked if he feared being typecast after “Cheers,” the answer was simple: “The transition was easy because I blew my personal life up so badly.” He didn’t even process that the show had ended for months because he was consumed with “dealing with myself and my personal stuff.”

“Cheers” concluded after 11 seasons when Danson expressed his desire to pursue other acting opportunities. Network executives decided the show couldn’t continue without its central star.

“I was changing for the better and working really hard at that, so I thought, ‘Might as well jump completely off the cliff,'” he explained. “And [there was] a little bit of… if I don’t leave now, I may not know if I could do anything else, and I want to see if I can do any other stuff.”

That leap of faith paid off. Following “Cheers,” Danson starred in “Becker,” “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” and “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” before introducing himself to a new generation in “The Good Place.”

He’s currently starring in the hit Netflix series “Man on the Inside,” playing a retired professor who becomes an undercover spy in a nursing home — proof that personal transformation and professional reinvention are possible at any age.

“There’s something inherently funny about a 76-year-old man who is a [retired] college professor, his life shut down, his daughter’s worried, so she says, ‘Get a project,’ and he happens to whimsically find a project where he becomes an undercover spy in a retirement home,” Danson told People in November 2024.
