Brazilian lawmakers preparing to conduct official business at the Mato Grosso Legislative Assembly found themselves sharing their halls with several uninvited guests on July 30. A group of capybaras — the world’s largest living rodents — casually strolled into the government building in Cuiabá, briefly commanding attention away from an upcoming vote.

Video recorded by legislative staffer Nayara Bueno captured the animals moving calmly through the entrance while workers attempted to guide them back outside. The footage quickly circulated online, showcasing the surreal moment when wildlife interrupted the machinery of government.

“They show up here quite often, so we’ve gotten used to seeing them,” Bueno told reporters.

The rodents’ unexpected appearance caused no damage to the state legislature, according to officials. The building borders a park that serves as home to various wildlife, giving the animals easy access to the surrounding government complex.

Native to South America, capybaras are semiaquatic mammals commonly found around wetlands and other bodies of water. These highly social creatures generally travel in groups and can reach weights of approximately 175 pounds.

The animals have become internet favorites in recent years, with social media users frequently highlighting their remarkably laid-back behavior around other animals and people. Their calm demeanor, even when wandering into government buildings, has made them symbols of unbothered tranquility in an increasingly chaotic world.
