Do You Support Trump’s 35% Tariff on Canadian Goods to Combat Fentanyl?

Here’s The Scoop

President Donald Trump is taking a bold stand against Canada, threatening to impose a hefty 35% tariff on Canadian goods starting August 1. This move comes after Trump accused our northern neighbor of failing to curb the flow of deadly fentanyl into the United States and responding with retaliatory tariffs of their own.

In a letter to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which Trump shared on Truth Social, he emphasized the strength and commitment of the U.S.-Canada trading relationship but didn’t shy away from pointing out its current challenges. Trump made it clear that while the U.S. is willing to collaborate, Canada’s decision to impose tariffs against American goods has not gone unnoticed.

Trump’s letter highlighted the ongoing fentanyl crisis, which he attributes partly to Canada’s inability to stop the drug’s influx into the U.S. “Instead of working with the United States, Canada retaliated with its own tariffs,” Trump wrote, announcing the 35% tariff on Canadian products entering the U.S. starting in 2025. He warned that any attempts to evade this tariff would result in even higher penalties.

The president also offered an olive branch, suggesting that if Canadian companies choose to manufacture within the United States, they could avoid these tariffs altogether. Trump assured that the U.S. would expedite approvals for such ventures, making it an attractive option for Canadian businesses.

Furthermore, Trump addressed the “extraordinary Tariffs” Canada imposes on American dairy farmers, which can reach a staggering 400%. He hinted at potential adjustments to these tariffs if Canada cooperates in stopping the fentanyl flow. “These Tariffs may be modified, upward or downward, depending on our relationship with your Country,” he stated, promising that Canada would never be disappointed with the United States.

Earlier this year, Trump had already imposed 25% tariffs on Canadian steel, automobiles, and other goods not covered under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. In response, Canada slapped $43 billion worth of tariffs on American products.

This decisive action comes as part of Trump’s broader strategy to address the national emergency of fentanyl deaths, which he has linked to imports from China via Mexico and Canada. By holding Canada accountable, Trump is standing firm in his commitment to protect American lives and businesses.
