Do You Think the Government Should Enforce Stronger Regulations on “Forever Chemicals” in Beer?
Here’s The Scoop
Recent research has raised concerns about the presence of “forever chemicals” in some American beers, sparking a debate about public health and regulatory oversight. A study by the ACS’ Environmental Science & Technology has found that certain beers brewed in the U.S. contain high levels of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), exceeding the limits set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
These “forever chemicals,” known for their persistence in the environment and human body, have somehow found their way into our beloved brews. Jennifer Hoponick Redmon, the lead researcher, expressed her concern as a beer enthusiast herself, hoping that these findings will push for better water treatment strategies to keep our beer safe and enjoyable.
Despite breweries employing water filtration systems, these are not specifically designed to tackle PFAS contamination. Redmon’s team adapted an EPA testing method to analyze PFAS levels in 23 different beers, focusing on regions with known water contamination issues.
The results were eye-opening. Beers from North Carolina, California, and Michigan showed elevated PFAS levels, correlating with the contamination levels in local drinking water. This indicates a direct link between the quality of municipal water and the safety of the beer produced.
Interestingly, international beers from Holland and Mexico showed lower PFAS levels, suggesting that this is a uniquely American problem tied to our water systems. This discovery underscores the urgent need for improved water infrastructure and stricter regulatory measures to protect consumers.
As Americans, we cherish our freedoms, including the freedom to enjoy a cold beer without worrying about harmful chemicals. It’s time for policymakers to take action and ensure that our water—and by extension, our beer—is clean and safe. Let’s hold those responsible accountable and demand better for our communities.
