In his collection “Things That Matter,” Krauthammer explored why we’ve never detected intelligent life in the cosmos. His conclusion was chilling: advanced civilizations likely destroy themselves.

“This silent universe is conveying not a flattering lesson about our uniqueness but a tragic story of our destiny,” Krauthammer wrote. “It is telling us that intelligence may be the most cursed faculty in the entire universe — an endowment not just ultimately fatal but, on the scale of cosmic time, nearly instantly so.”

Fast forward to today, and we’re staring down the barrel of artificial intelligence — a technology advancing faster than anyone can control.

The AI race began in earnest at a Dartmouth College workshop in 1956. Over the decades, funding dried up twice during “AI winters” as fear and lack of profitability slowed progress. Those days are long gone.

Now the accelerator is stuck to the floor, and nobody’s hitting the brakes. The race to the “Singularity” — the point where AI surpasses human intelligence and can improve itself without us — is on.

Elon Musk declared on January 4: “We have entered the Singularity.” Hours later, he posted again: “2026 is the year of the Singularity.”

Think about that. The world’s most powerful tech innovator is telling us we’ve already crossed the threshold where machines can outsmart humanity.

Meanwhile, Communist China and its dictator Xi Jinping are pouring unlimited resources into weaponizing AI. Big data already controls battlefields in Ukraine and the Middle East. American innovation is being matched — and potentially surpassed — by adversaries who don’t care about ethics or human rights.

Krauthammer offered a glimmer of hope in his cosmic meditation: “Intelligence is a capacity so godlike, so protean that it must be contained and disciplined.”

“Politics,” he concluded, “is the driver of history.”

Translation: It’s up to us. American citizens and our elected leaders must take control of AI development before it controls us. The alternative is a nightmare future where unaccountable algorithms make life-and-death decisions for our children and grandchildren.

The rise of the machines isn’t science fiction anymore. It’s happening right now, and the window to establish guardrails is closing fast.

Some Americans take comfort in religious faith, trusting God has a plan no matter what happens. But even the most devout must ask: what does God expect when humanity stands before the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

The biblical answer is clear: Don’t go there.

Yet here we are, racing headlong into AI supremacy with no consensus on safety, no international framework for control, and tech billionaires making God-level decisions in corporate boardrooms.

We face an existential choice. Either Americans demand accountability and Constitutional limits on artificial intelligence, or we surrender the future to machines programmed by people who may not share our values.

China certainly doesn’t. Big Tech has already shown it can’t be trusted to police itself. The only institution capable of protecting American liberty is our constitutional system of government — if we use it.

Krauthammer’s warning about the silent cosmos wasn’t just about extraterrestrial life. It was about us. About whether we’re smart enough to survive our own creations.

The Constitution must be defended.
