EMBARRASSING: China Built Jaw-Dropping Rail Empire While California Governor Burns Taxpayer Billions on Empty Track

Liberty Check

  • California’s high-speed rail project has burned through billions in taxpayer dollars over nearly two decades without carrying a single passenger
  • During the same period, China constructed enough high-speed rail track to circle the entire globe — demonstrating what focused execution looks like
  • Governor Newsom just announced another $2.7 billion in transportation spending while his signature rail project remains a monument to government waste

Nearly twenty years ago, California and China both launched ambitious high-speed rail projects. Today, China has built a rail network so massive it could wrap around the Earth — while California’s bullet train sits empty, having never transported a single passenger.

The humiliating comparison highlights everything wrong with progressive governance: endless spending, zero accountability, and results that never materialize.

On Friday, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom proudly announced another $2.7 billion for more than 150 transportation projects across the state. Meanwhile, his flagship high-speed rail initiative — once promised to connect San Francisco to Los Angeles — has become a national punchline and a textbook case of government incompetence.

California voters approved the initial bond measure for high-speed rail in 2008, with projections estimating a $33 billion price tag and a 2020 completion date. Fast forward to 2025, and the project has ballooned to an estimated $128 billion with no clear timeline for completion.

During this same period, China built over 45,000 kilometers of high-speed rail — enough track to circle America more than three times. Their trains now connect major cities across the world’s most populous nation, moving millions of passengers daily at speeds exceeding 200 miles per hour.

The contrast is stark and painful. While Communist China executed its infrastructure vision with ruthless efficiency, California’s bloated bureaucracy, environmental lawsuits, union demands, and cost overruns have produced little more than a few segments of unused track in the Central Valley.

Critics have long warned that California’s approach to the project was doomed from the start. Layers of regulation, endless litigation from environmental groups, and politically-motivated route changes turned what should have been a straightforward engineering project into a bureaucratic nightmare.

The federal government has poured billions into the California project as well, making this a national embarrassment — not just a state-level failure. Taxpayers from across America have subsidized a train that exists primarily on paper and in press releases.

Newsom continues to champion the project publicly, insisting it will eventually revolutionize transportation in California. But with each passing year and each new budget increase, fewer Californians believe the promises.

The high-speed rail debacle represents everything that’s broken about California’s progressive governance model: grand visions without execution, taxpayer money flowing freely with no accountability, and political leaders more interested in photo ops than results.

China’s success — achieved under an authoritarian regime with its own serious problems — makes California’s failure all the more embarrassing. If a communist dictatorship can build functional infrastructure while California cannot, serious questions must be asked about the competence of state leadership.

The $2.7 billion transportation announcement this week offers little comfort to taxpayers who have watched billions disappear into the high-speed rail black hole. More money, more projects, more promises — but where are the results?

Americans deserve better than empty promises and wasted billions.
