Iowa Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rob Sand delivered a stunning rebuke to his own party’s most recent standard-bearers, flatly stating he wants nothing to do with either former President Joe Biden or former Vice President Kamala Harris on the campaign trail.

When Politico’s Jonathan Martin asked Sand if he would want Biden to campaign for him, the candidate didn’t hesitate. “No. Can he even do that right now? I’m sorry,” Sand said.

“No thanks,” Sand added when asked about Harris. “Let’s move on. We need some new leadership.”

The exchange reveals the toxic political legacy left by the Biden-Harris administration — so damaging that even Democrats running in competitive races are desperate to distance themselves from their own party’s former leadership.

Martin pressed further, asking if Sand believes Harris should run again in 2028.

“Nope,” he replied without elaboration.

Harris herself has hinted at another presidential bid, telling Al Sharpton in April that she “might” run in 2028 and was “thinking about it.” Sand’s blunt dismissal suggests rank-and-file Democrats see the failed vice president as a liability, not an asset.

Biden dropped his 2024 re-election bid after a catastrophic debate performance exposed his declining mental acuity to the American people. He endorsed Harris, who proceeded to lose decisively to President Donald Trump in the general election. That failure continues to haunt Democrats as they face midterm elections.

Sand, currently serving as Iowa auditor of state, is running against Trump-backed Republican Zach Lahn in the state’s 2026 gubernatorial race. Lahn has the full support of the America First movement.

President Trump declared on Truth Social last month:

“It is my Great Honor to endorse America First Patriot, Zach Lahn, a tremendous Candidate running to be the next Governor of the Wonderful State of Iowa, a place I love and WON BIG in 2016, 2020, and 2024!”

That endorsement carries enormous weight in Iowa, where Trump has proven his dominance across three consecutive presidential cycles. Iowa voters have consistently rejected the Democratic agenda, and Sand’s refusal to embrace Biden and Harris suggests he understands that basic political reality.

Current Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds announced last year she would not seek re-election, opening the door for this competitive race. With Trump’s backing, Lahn is well-positioned to keep Iowa’s governorship in conservative hands and continue the America First policies that have resonated with Iowans.

Sand’s public rejection of Biden and Harris is a tacit admission that the Democratic Party’s recent leadership has been a disaster. Whether his attempt to distance himself from that failure will resonate with Iowa voters remains to be seen, but it won’t erase the damage done by four years of failed progressive policies.
