  • Violent offenders must face swift and certain consequences to protect law-abiding citizens.
  • Courthouse security lapses put deputies and the public at risk.
  • Strong law enforcement and tough sentencing defend the rule of law.

A newly sentenced Ohio man reportedly broke free from his restraints and attacked deputies in a shocking courthouse outburst. Video released by the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office captured the chaotic moments that unfolded right after sentencing.

The inmate was being escorted down a hallway when he suddenly slipped out of his handcuffs and threw a punch at the bailiff. Deputies quickly responded, but not before the suspect barreled into a second officer, sending him crashing to the floor.

“Both deputies suffered broken bones but have since been released from the hospital,” Sheriff Brian McLaughlin confirmed.

The suspect sprinted toward the courthouse exit, tumbling down the steps in a frantic bid to reach the front doors. Deputies finally stopped the escape with a Taser, bringing the dramatic chase to an end.

One deputy was later seen lying on the floor, bleeding from the head and holding a paper towel against his face. Fellow officers and bystanders rushed to help the injured men.

The attack came minutes after the 20-year-old was sentenced to one year in prison for aggravated burglary, aggravated assault, and related charges. New counts of assault on an officer and felony escape are now expected.

Sheriff McLaughlin stated the suspect remains in the county jail and will be transferred to state prison once the latest charges are filed.

Our freedoms depend on staying vigilant.
