Officer Forced to Fire Single Shot as Armed Threat Charges Through Crowded Park

A police response to reports of a man chasing a woman turned into a life-or-death confrontation when an armed suspect charged an officer through a packed seaside park in Santa Monica, California. Newly released bodycam footage captures the harrowing moments that left one man dead and raises serious questions about the dangers law enforcement faces every single day.

The incident unfolded August 22 as Santa Monica Police Department officers investigated a report of a man chasing a woman near the Broadway stairs. What they encountered instead was 44-year-old Michael Rodriguez wielding a large knife above his head, moving toward an officer and multiple bystanders in the crowded Palisades Park.

Two uniformed officers had responded to Broadway and Ocean Avenue at approximately 12:30 p.m. The popular oceanfront location was filled with pedestrians, families, visitors and vendors that Saturday afternoon when the deadly encounter began.

“Hey, put that down,”

an officer can be heard repeatedly commanding as he draws his firearm and backs away from Rodriguez. The officer gave multiple clear warnings while retreating from the advancing threat.

“Put it down. Put that down,”

the officer orders, his voice firm but controlled even as the danger escalates.

Rodriguez ignored every warning. He continued advancing with the knife raised above his head, then quickened his pace and closed the distance between himself and the retreating officer. The bodycam footage shows the officer had no choice — he was being pursued by an armed assailant in a crowded public space filled with innocent civilians.

The officer fired one round from his department-issued firearm, striking Rodriguez in the chest. Bodycam video from the second officer shows Rodriguez falling to the ground as the knife drops from his hand.

Officers immediately called for backup and requested emergency medical personnel. But the situation was even more dangerous than it initially appeared — Rodriguez was carrying not one, but three knives.

As police approached Rodriguez and checked him for additional weapons, an officer discovered a second knife in his right pants pocket. Officers also spotted the handle of a third knife sticking out of his backpack.

Investigators described the knife carried during the confrontation as a large, fixed-blade “fighting and utility style” weapon with a clip-point blade, protective hand guard, metal grip and serrations along part of its spine. This was not a pocket knife — this was a weapon designed for combat.

Despite the deadly threat Rodriguez posed, officers immediately began treating his wound. They applied gauze and a chest seal before performing chest compressions in an effort to save his life.

“Come on, you need to breathe,”

an officer can be heard pleading as police continued their lifesaving efforts — the same man who moments earlier had been forced to defend himself and the public.

Santa Monica Fire Department personnel later took over medical care and transported Rodriguez to a local hospital. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at approximately 1:49 p.m. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner ruled his death a homicide caused by a gunshot wound to the chest.

No officers, bystanders or other members of the public were injured — a testament to the officer’s restraint and precision under extreme pressure.

“Any loss of life is tragic, and we recognize the impact on the family, our officers and our community,”

Santa Monica Police Chief Darrick Jacob said in a statement.

“Our officers face difficult and dangerous situations every day. When a life is lost during a police encounter, our responsibility to provide a clear and open account is especially important. Releasing this video is an important step in providing that account to our community.”

The Santa Monica Police Department said detectives are conducting a criminal investigation into the shooting. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office will separately review the officer’s use of deadly force, while the police department conducts an internal administrative investigation.

This case illustrates the impossible situations law enforcement officers navigate daily. They must make split-second decisions while facing armed threats, protecting innocent bystanders, and knowing their every action will be scrutinized and second-guessed by armchair critics who have never faced such danger.

The bodycam footage is clear: the officer gave repeated commands, attempted to de-escalate by retreating, and only fired when left with no other option. Yet inevitably, anti-police activists will ignore these facts and exploit this tragedy to push their defund-the-police agenda.

Authorities cautioned that the bodycam video and accompanying briefing reflect preliminary evidence and do not represent final findings or conclusions. But the video speaks for itself.
