Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche took a major step toward Senate confirmation Sunday after formally scrapping a controversial $1.8 billion “anti-weaponization fund” that raised serious oversight concerns among constitutional conservatives.

The move came after Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., held firm against Blanche’s nomination, demanding accountability and transparency. A spokeswoman for Cornyn confirmed an agreement had been reached following weeks of intense negotiations.

The Senate Judiciary Committee is now scheduled to vote on the nomination Tuesday.

“My team and I have met with committee members and Senators over the past several weeks and addressed any concerns or outstanding questions,” Blanche said in a statement Sunday.

“We have enjoyed good faith discussions, and as a result issue the following order and update with regard to the May IRS settlement. The Department always welcomes and appreciates productive engagement with all members of Congress.”

Blanche’s order formally rescinded the May 18 directive that established the fund. He also clarified that tax-related protections included in the settlement with President Donald Trump apply only retroactively—not to future tax filings.

The development represents a significant win for Senate Republicans who refused to rubber-stamp the nomination without serious reforms. Their willingness to demand answers and hold the line demonstrates exactly the kind of oversight Americans expect from their elected representatives.
