Liberty Check

  • California Governor Gavin Newsom finally releases tax returns showing massive annual income while middle-class Californians face crushing cost of living
  • Newsom and his wife raked in up to $2 million yearly from 2022-2024, raising questions about his elite lifestyle amid state’s homelessness and affordability crisis
  • The governor paid roughly half a million in taxes annually while pushing policies that burden working families with higher tax rates and regulations

California Governor Gavin Newsom’s long-awaited tax returns have finally surfaced, and the numbers are raising eyebrows across the state. According to documents released by his office, Newsom and his wife pulled in between $1.7 million and $2 million each year from 2022 through 2024.

The disclosure reveals the Democratic governor paid approximately half a million dollars annually in combined federal and state taxes. While that may sound significant, it only highlights the vast financial gulf between Newsom and the everyday Californians struggling under policies he champions.

Critics are pointing to the stark contrast between Newsom’s elite income bracket and the financial hardships facing middle-class families in the Golden State. California currently boasts some of the nation’s highest taxes, most expensive housing, and worst homelessness rates—all under Newsom’s watch.

The release comes after years of questions about the governor’s personal finances and business connections. Newsom has long positioned himself as a champion of the working class while maintaining ties to California’s wealthy elite and enjoying a lifestyle far removed from average voters.

Conservative watchdog groups have noted that while Newsom lectures Americans about income inequality and pushes for higher taxes on businesses, his own household income places him firmly in the top 1% of earners. The governor’s wealth stands in sharp relief against the backdrop of California’s exodus of middle-class families fleeing high costs and poor governance.

Questions remain about the sources of the Newsoms’ substantial income and whether any conflicts of interest exist between the governor’s financial holdings and his policy decisions. Transparency advocates argue that the belated release raises more questions than it answers.

Americans deserve better.
