New York City’s socialist mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing unexpected criticism from an NBA veteran who’s had enough of performative politics.

Milwaukee Bucks forward Kyle Kuzma unleashed on the Democratic Socialist mayor after Mamdani released a video calling for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu under an International Criminal Court warrant.

“This is 2026. People cosplaying as things they don’t have the authority, the talent, or the track record to actually be. Just for content,” Kuzma wrote, quote-tweeting Mamdani’s address.

The nine-year NBA veteran didn’t hold back, suggesting the mayor was more concerned with viral videos than actually running America’s largest city.

“A mayor playing president. A founder playing operator. A content creator playing one-on-one, thinking he’s a pro. A 25-year-old with a ring light playing economist. Everyone auditioning. Nobody building. We’re raising a generation that is learning the reward isn’t in doing the thing; it’s in looking like you did the thing.”

“The clip is the career. The pose is the product. The soundbite is the substitute for a life’s work. Don’t fall for distractions.”

Kuzma’s takedown comes as Mamdani faces mounting criticism for focusing on international conflicts while New York City struggles with crime, sanitation issues, and housing affordability crises that actually fall under his jurisdiction.

The mayor previously directed the city’s legal department to examine whether New York police could enforce the ICC warrant against Netanyahu. He later admitted the city has no legal authority to arrest visiting foreign leaders — making his entire video nothing more than political theater.

Israel rejects the ICC’s jurisdiction, and Netanyahu has repeatedly denied the court’s allegations.

The controversy has divided NBA players. Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama were spotted liking Mamdani’s Instagram post, in which he called Netanyahu “the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people.”

Representatives for both players did not respond to requests for comment.

Kuzma has earned a reputation as one of the NBA’s few active players willing to publicly challenge progressive talking points — a rarity in a league where most stars stay silent or fall in line with leftist orthodoxy.

Jewish organizations and political opponents have sustained their criticism of Mamdani over his inflammatory rhetoric on Israel, which he has accused of genocide.

The mayor’s focus on international grandstanding while New York City residents deal with real problems has become a pattern that critics say reveals his priorities: building a national progressive brand rather than fixing the city he was elected to govern.
