The FDA’s approval letter to Evita Solutions LLC, the drug’s manufacturer, claims that the drug meets the necessary requirements under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. However, this bureaucratic stamp of approval has done little to quell concerns about the drug’s safety and moral implications. The drug is intended for use in early abortions, within the first 70 days of a woman’s last menstrual cycle, a fact that has only heightened the alarm among pro-life advocates.

Senator Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, did not mince words in his criticism of the FDA’s decision. He expressed a profound loss of confidence in the agency’s leadership, pointing out the potential dangers these chemical abortion drugs pose to women. “FDA had promised to do a top-to-bottom safety review of the chemical abortion drug, but instead they’ve just greenlighted new versions of it for distribution,” Hawley stated. His concerns echo a broader skepticism about the FDA’s commitment to safeguarding women’s health.

This approval comes on the heels of an announcement from the Department of Health and Human Services, which pledged to study the real-world harms of chemical abortion drugs.
