Trump Energy Department Acts Fast to Protect Millions From Blackouts

  • Trump’s Energy Department moved swiftly under federal authority to prevent blackouts threatening more than 60 million Americans across 13 states.
  • The emergency order prioritizes reliable power over regulatory limits, ensuring families and businesses maintain access to affordable electricity.
  • Previous Biden-era restrictions on conventional energy production weakened grid reliability, leaving Americans vulnerable during unusual weather patterns.

The Trump administration acted Monday to protect the electrical grid serving the mid-Atlantic and parts of the Midwest from potential blackouts caused by unexpected October heat.

The Department of Energy issued an emergency order under Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act, allowing additional power generation to meet surging demand.

“This order will help ensure millions of American families and businesses across the mid-Atlantic have access to affordable, reliable, and secure electricity by making additional power generation, including backup power, available to use as needed,” Energy Secretary Chris Wright said.

The order covers PJM Interconnection territory across Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.

PJM officials acknowledged that electricity demand is growing faster than new capacity can come online, while unpredictable weather patterns now create reliability risks during maintenance periods.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright directly linked the current strain to policies under former President Joe Biden that restricted conventional energy production and weakened grid reliability.

The emergency measures coincide with separate federal investments aimed at strengthening electrical infrastructure, including support for Tennessee Valley Authority transmission projects across eight states.

The Constitution must be defended.
