The Democratic Socialists of America is making a disturbing play to fundamentally transform the U.S. economy — targeting everything from corporate ownership to work schedules, and demanding taxpayers foot the bill for “free” healthcare, college, and housing.

The far-left agenda is facing fierce scrutiny after DSA-backed candidates scored victories in the 2026 midterm primaries. Progressive socialism has become a central Republican target, featured prominently at the GOP’s first-ever midterm convention in Dallas.

Here’s what these radicals actually want.

DSA calls for outright public ownership of major corporations and essential industries. They claim government control would give Americans greater “democratic control” over the economy — code for bureaucrats running businesses into the ground.

Adam Lehodey, a policy expert at the Manhattan Institute, laid out the harsh reality: nationalizing major corporations would cost billions of dollars and shift accountability away from customers to unelected government officials.

“Nationalized industries have historically suffered from waste, corruption and lower productivity,” Lehodey warned.

He argued that reducing regulations — not seizing private property — would be the better way to encourage real competition and innovation.

The socialist wish list doesn’t stop there. DSA also demands a mandatory 32-hour workweek without reducing workers’ pay or benefits.

Translation: businesses would be forced to give full-time employees an extra day off while maintaining full compensation — regardless of productivity or economic reality.

The proposal comes bundled with a “living minimum wage,” paid family leave, and expanded union powers. But there’s a catch: the agenda offers zero explanation for how this shorter workweek would actually work across different industries or how small businesses would absorb the massive labor cost increases.

Lehodey didn’t mince words: a 32-hour workweek without corresponding productivity gains would spike labor costs and crater economic output.

Among DSA’s most expensive fantasies are universal healthcare, government-owned social housing, “free” public education through college, and complete cancellation of all student debt.

Together, these proposals would transfer a staggering share of healthcare, housing, and education costs from individuals directly onto the federal government — meaning hardworking taxpayers.

A Cato Institute analysis estimated that a Medicare-for-All-style healthcare system alone could explode federal spending by between $40 trillion and $75 trillion over a decade. And that’s just one piece of the socialist puzzle.

So who pays for this utopian dream? According to DSA, wealthy Americans and large corporations should shoulder the entire burden.

The platform demands “aggressive wealth taxes” on the richest individuals and corporations, with the proceeds funneled toward “public goods and infrastructure.”

But Lehodey raised the obvious question: can wealthy taxpayers alone actually finance this massive agenda? His answer: absolutely not.

He argued that middle-class taxpayers would inevitably bear a crushing portion of the cost. Tellingly, DSA’s platform provides no estimate of the total price tag or how much revenue its proposed tax increases would actually generate.
