Trump’s Voter Eligibility Order Sparks Fresh Debate

President Donald Trump issued an executive order Tuesday aimed at purging ineligible voters from mail-in systems and securing federal elections. This directive uses federal resources to ensure that only verified U.S. citizens receive absentee ballots, reinforcing the integrity of the democratic process.

Under the new rules, the Department of Homeland Security will compile a list of eligible citizens while the Postal Service must verify recipients against this database. The order also mandates specific barcodes on envelopes to enhance tracking and transparency for every mail-in vote cast.

  • The order asserts that voting in federal elections is a right reserved exclusively for American citizens under the Constitution.
  • State officials will receive lists of confirmed eligible voters at least 60 days before any federal election occurs.
  • The Attorney General is instructed to prosecute any entities or officials providing ballots to individuals who cannot prove their eligibility.

“The right to vote in Federal elections is reserved exclusively for citizens of the United States under the Constitution and Federal law,” Trump’s order states.

“Federal statutes explicitly prohibit non-citizens from registering to vote or voting in Federal elections and impose criminal penalties for violations.”

This executive action comes as the Senate remains stalled on the SAVE America Act, which would codified proof-of-citizenship requirements into law. While critics claim these measures infringe on access, proponents argue that verifying identity is the only way to maintain public trust in the 2026 midterms.

The President noted that while activist judges may attempt to block the order, the administration is prepared to defend the constitutional necessity of secure elections on appeal. Protecting the sanctity of the ballot box remains a primary duty of the federal government under its existing legal mandates.
