Biden-Era Gun Control Rule Faces Trump DOJ Execution
Liberty Check
- Acting AG Todd Blanche targets decades-old ATF regulation limiting firearm imports
- The ‘sporting purposes’ test has long restricted Second Amendment rights of law-abiding Americans
- Three major Biden-era gun regulations set for elimination under Trump administration
A decades-old regulatory restriction that has limited the rights of law-abiding gun owners to purchase firearms of their choice may soon be history. The Trump administration has set its sights on dismantling one of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ oldest and most controversial tests.
During an April 29 press conference, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche announced that three major regulations imposed by the Biden administration were slated to be eliminated. Among them is the so-called “sporting purposes” test, a regulatory framework that has long been criticized by Second Amendment advocates as an unconstitutional infringement on gun rights.
The “sporting purposes” test has historically been used by the ATF to determine which firearms can be legally imported into the United States. Critics argue the test imposes arbitrary standards that have nothing to do with the Constitution’s guarantee of the right to keep and bear arms.
For years, this regulation has prevented Americans from accessing certain firearms available to citizens in other countries, despite those weapons posing no greater danger than domestically produced alternatives. The test has effectively created a two-tiered system where bureaucrats, not citizens, decide what constitutes an acceptable firearm.
The move to eliminate this regulation represents a significant victory for constitutional conservatives who have long argued that the federal government has overstepped its authority in regulating firearms. The Second Amendment makes no mention of “sporting purposes” or any other subjective criteria for gun ownership.
This action is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to roll back the regulatory overreach of the Biden years. The previous administration aggressively pursued gun control measures through executive action and regulatory changes, circumventing Congress and the will of the American people.
Second Amendment advocates have celebrated the announcement as a restoration of constitutional rights. The elimination of arbitrary standards like the “sporting purposes” test represents a return to the original intent of the Founders, who recognized the inherent right of Americans to defend themselves and their families.
The Constitution must be defended.
