Trump Targets Major European Nation Over Staggering Drug Price Theft
Liberty Check
- Germany has been forcing U.S. pharmaceutical companies to sell life-saving drugs at steep discounts while Americans pay up to four times more for the same medications
- President Trump launched a Section 301 investigation into Germany’s unfair drug pricing practices that shift billions in development costs onto American patients and workers
- After Trump’s pressure, the United Kingdom already agreed to pay fairer prices for American medicines — Germany must follow suit or face consequences
America’s supposed allies in Europe continue their pattern of exploitation, only to feign shock when President Donald Trump demands accountability. First came their refusal to fund their own defense until NATO withdrawal threats changed their tune. Then came the unfair trade barriers until massive tariffs forced reform.
Now the Trump administration is confronting Germany for systematically stealing U.S. pharmaceutical innovations while forcing American families to shoulder the burden.
On June 18, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced a major investigation into German drug pricing after Germany proposed paying even less for medicines developed in America. The country has spent decades bilking American companies and patients through artificially mandated price controls.
Germany forces pharmaceutical companies to accept steep discounts, making medications appear cheap for German citizens. But drugs aren’t cheap to develop — U.S. companies invest an average of $2.7 billion to bring a single pharmaceutical to market.
These companies must recover those massive costs to fund the next generation of treatments and employ American workers. When European nations refuse to pay their fair share, they directly transfer those costs to American patients who end up subsidizing European healthcare.
For the most expensive medications, Americans already pay four times more than Germans for identical drugs. Germans receive the same life-saving treatments as Americans but contribute a fraction of the development costs.
The math is simple: Germans aren’t paying their fair share. And incredibly, Germany now wants to pay even less.
The Trump administration launched a Section 301 investigation into Germany’s “persistent underpayment for innovative pharmaceutical products.” The investigation will continue through fall, with a public hearing scheduled for September 22.
If the administration concludes Germany has acted unfairly — which the evidence overwhelmingly suggests — tariffs could follow.
German leaders responded with predictable European outrage. They claim the investigation threatens a broader U.S.-EU trade deal.
But President Trump has demonstrated repeatedly he won’t settle for deals that harm Americans. German leaders would be wise to start paying more for U.S. drugs immediately, not plotting to pay less.
The United Kingdom provides the blueprint. Until earlier this year, the U.K. also paid far below fair market rates for American medicines.
After Trump threatened tariffs, the U.K. agreed to pay more. While not perfect, the deal shifts some of the unfair burden off American shoulders — exactly what Germany must do.
When Germany accepts responsibility for paying what these drugs are actually worth, Americans will benefit across the board. Patients will see drug prices drop as costs are distributed fairly.
American pharmaceutical companies — the engines of global medical innovation — will maintain their ability to develop breakthrough treatments and cures. And other nations will understand America refuses to be exploited on drug pricing any longer.
If the rest of the world wants access to the life-saving medications developed here, they need to start paying what those innovations are worth.
The Trump administration deserves strong support for holding Germany accountable. If German leaders possess any wisdom, they’ll abandon their plans to increase their theft from America and negotiate a deal that restores fairness.
The United States deserves better than supposed friends who steal our companies’ innovations and pick our citizens’ pockets. Under President Trump, European leaders are finally learning they can no longer take advantage of America.
Americans deserve better.
